Pupil Premium

Pupil premium funding aims to raise the attainment of disadvantaged pupils and to eliminate difference in attainment between them and their peers.  It is additional to main school funding and it will be used by this school to address underlying inequalities by ensuring that funding reaches the pupils who need it most.


To claim free school meals you can:

  • Download a copy of the Free School Meal form
  • Collect a copy from the school office. 


Please apply for free school meals, even if your child is in receipt of universal infant free school meals or even if they bring packed lunches as this is a significant amount of money and it is important that school receives funding for ALL children who are entitled.

At Hamer Primary School our vision is that all members of staff, governors and teaching assistants are responsible for all children, including disadvantaged pupils, and we are committed to meeting their pastoral, social and academic needs. 


As with every child in the school, a child who is disadvantaged is valued, respected and leave school having developed to their full potential, irrespective of need, had a variety of enriching experiences and developed skills for life.   While quality first teaching lies at the heart of provision for disadvantaged pupils, as a school we are determined that Pupil Premium funding has maximum impact.




Research indicates that pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds achieve less well than their non-disadvantaged peers.  Pupil Premium funding aims to support these pupils to catch up with their peers.


The Pupil Premium is a government initiative and is a specific grant directed to:

  • Children registered eligible for Free School Meals (FSM) or at any point over the last 6 years.
  • Looked after children (LAC)
  • Children of parents currently serving in the armed forces.


The way in which this funding is utilised is not prescriptive, but all schools are expected to employ evidence based approaches and strategies that will enable pupils to increase their attainment.





The school recognises that not all pupils who receive free school meals will be socially disadvantaged.  Similarly, we recognise that not all pupils who are socially disadvantaged are registered or qualify for free school meals. Therefore, we will allocate the Pupil Premium funding to support any pupils who school has identified as being disadvantaged.


In order to determine spending priorities, the school analyses internal and external data, examines historical attainment and trends and speaks with parents, pupils and staff.


Our current priority is to enable those pupils not on track to achieve age related expectations by the end of Key Stage 2.


As part of the additional provision made for pupils who belong to vulnerable groups, the school assessed the needs of disadvantaged pupils through half termly pupil progress meetings and addressed their provision needs.


The range of provision includes but is not restricted to:


  • Support for vulnerable families.
  • Additional teaching and learning opportunities.
  • Facilitating pupils’ access to education and the curriculum.
  • Supporting extra-curricular activities and non-classed based learning.
  • Support for additional needs.





An annual report to parents will be made for each academic year which will include:


  • The progress made towards narrowing the gap for disadvantaged pupils.
  • An outline of provision and evaluation of its effectiveness.


A copy of the report will be published on the school’s website.


It is the responsibility of the Leadership Team to outline the school’s progress towards eliminating the difference between disadvantaged and non-disadvantaged pupils to the school’s Governors on a regular basis.


This task will be carried out within the requirements published by the Department for Education.


Success Criteria


Hamer aims to effectively minimise or eliminate the difference between socially disadvantaged pupils and their peers.   This aim is not merely for the short term and in terms of SATS results but also for long term gains in academic achievement, social inclusion and high aspirations.  Targets will be identified and evaluated annually and included in the School Development Plan.


The success criteria for the Pupil Premium Policy include:


  • Having a whole-school approach.
  • Early intervention and support for disadvantaged children.
  • The meeting of individual targets for the majority of disadvantaged children.
  • Having an effective system for identifying, assessing and monitoring pupils.
  • Creating a positive school atmosphere in which pupils’ differences are recognised, celebrated and where all children are valued as full members of the school community and supported to develop into confident and independent learners and citizens.
